Several Falcons planning ahead for life after the NFL

Posted: 1:04 p.m. Friday, February 23, 2018

A few years back, Falcons players Kevin Cone and Stephen Nicholas walked into Kevin Winston’s office in Flowery Branch.

They wanted to make plans for the post-NFL careers.

Winston, the team’s senior director of player affairs, coordinates the team’s Falcons University program, which encourages players to consider life after football.

Cone, who wanted to get into collegiate sports, works in the athletic department at Georgia Tech, and Nicholas, who wanted to get into coaching, was named an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday after coaching three years at South Florida.

A group of 20 Falcons gathered at NCR’s world headquarters in Midtown for the latest round of classes with several chief executive officers and executives from their staffs to discuss careers in technology, franchising and real estate.

“We are giving guys a chance to have an unique experience and get immersed in different fields within the business world,” Winston said. “They picked a particular company, shadowed executives and were exposed to different departments within the company.”

Falcons owner Arthur Blank addressed the players. Fred Weir, president of Zaxbys’ Atlanta co-op, executives from NCR, Falcons president Rich McKay and Georgia Tech athletic director Todd Stansbury were some of the speakers.

“When we started putting this program together, it was the players who identified the three categories, which was franchising, technology and real estate,” Winston said. “They actually have interests in these fields and actually had skin in the game in developing this program.”

Cone and Nicholas are players the Falcons can point to who are off to smooth post-NFL career transitions.

“Kevin Cone is guy who came through Falcons U,” Winston said. “A guy who was a free-agent walk-on. A guy who finished his undergrad and master’s at Georgia Tech and now is in the football-operations department.”

Some of the Falcons on hand included Grady Jarrett, Brian Poole, Matt Bryant, Josh Harris, Matt Bosher, Andre Roberts, Wes Schweitzer, Ben Garland, Sean Weatherspoon, Nick Williams, Blidi Wreh-Wilson, Jack Crawford, Justin Hardy and Jamil Douglas.

Former Falcons U. student D.J. Shockley, who has transitioned nicely into a broadcasting career, was the emcee of the program.

“They always say the NFL means ‘Not For Long,’ “ Roberts said. “So, I kind of started thinking about it when I got to (Washington) D.C. (with the Redskins) in 2014. I was thinking about what I wanted to do after football. I always thought about the restaurant business and being able to serve my community.”

Roberts and business partner Duran Lawson are set to open their first Zaxby’s restaurant in Loudon, Va., this summer.

Roberts and Lawson were sitting around one day playing video games and became hungry. They really wanted some chicken from Zaxby’s, but there were no stores in the area.

“So, we decided to look into it,” Roberts said.

The process started in 2016, and most of the planning and acquisitions are complete.

“Why we wanted to go with Zaxby’s is what they represented and how they said their growth is going to be in the coming years,” said Roberts, who was attracted to the college-scholarship program that the company has for its employees. “I really liked the franchise model.”

Crawford, Jarrett and Weatherspoon toured CNN.

Bryant, Douglas, Poole and Williams shadowed executives from Harry Norman Realtors.

Dontari Poe and Wreh-Wilson were set to shadow NCR executives.

“I want to start now early in my career with how to build a life off the field and how to be a better businessman,” said Jarrett, who majored in business administration at Clemson. “It’s been great to be around these successful businessmen and businesses like NCR. We are meeting some of the CEOs and big influencers around the city.”

Jarrett sees it as being proactive.

“Football is not the end of the road,” he said. “It’s up to a lot of guys on whether they want to make that decision now to start preparing for life after football.”

Weatherspoon, 30, has played eight seasons in the NFL.

“It’s never too early to get ready,” Weatherspoon said.

He’s not sure, but journalism is a possibility for the well-spoken Weatherspoon.

“I can be on TV talking about certain things, news, sports and things like that,” Weatherspoon said. “I could be coaching and being a part of a team. We work well with other people. I’ll definitely be serving others, but I don’t know in what capacity. I want to hone in on that now. I also could be a successful businessman as well.”

Bryant is set to enter his 17th season in the NFL.

“Playing football is the best part-time job that you’ll ever have, but it doesn’t last forever,” Bryant said. “Some people are more fortunate than others. I’ve beyond blessed to be going on Year 17.”

Bryant sat in the front of the class next to Harris and Bosher, his special teammates.

“To come here and get this knowledge from CEOs and people who are actually very successful at what they do, you can tap into that and hope that it helps when football is over,” Bryant said.

Zaxby’s rolls out food truck in time for football

Zaxby’s marketing this fall is where the rubber meets the road.

With the debut of a new food truck and an ongoing partnership with International Management Group’s college division, Zaxby’s has gained access to 27 colleges and amped up its “Zaxby’s Fanz of Flavor” tailgate tour in its second year.

The Athens, Ga.-based chicken brand will be hosting large-scale tailgate gatherings in six college communities this fall during highly anticipated rival-school football matchups, according to Erin Todd, Zaxby’s senior brand manager.

“We were really looking at ways to take our flavors on the road and engage with our guests outside the four walls of our restaurants,” said Todd in an interview. “Zaxby’s started in a college town, and we’ve always had a great relationship with college football.”

The tour had been set to start on Saturday with the Miami Hurricanes and Florida State Seminoles game in Tallahassee, Fla., but that matchup has been postposed until Oct. 7 because of the region’s recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Irma. A Zaxby’s spokeswoman said the tailgate tour would accommodate the postponement.

Other “Zaxby’s Fanz of Flavor” tailgate tour stops include: Sept. 30 for Clemson at Virginia Tech; Oct. 21 for Oklahoma State at Texas; Nov. 4 for Louisiana State at Alabama; Nov. 18 for LSU at Tennessee; and Nov. 25 for Clemson at South Carolina.

The Zaxby’s brand has deep roots in college sports. Founders Zach McLeroy and Tony Townley launched Zaxby’s in 1990 near a college campus in Statesboro, Ga.

“The majority of our guests are college football fans,” Todd said, so the brand was able to leverage its partnership with the International Management Group’s college division to schedule the game-day locations.

“We can be onsite and be part of the experience,” she said, adding that the company expects to give out thousands of chicken fingers samples and sauces at each event.

The addition of a new food truck this year has expanded the football tailgate tour, Todd said. “We feel like it allows fans to have a fresh-cooked chicken fingers, which adds a lot to the experience on game day,” she said.

The food truck will serve as the centerpiece of an area that includes grandstand-style seating, customer games, giveaways and televisions with satellite feeds to air other college football games, she said.

Zaxby’s is enhancing the tour by inviting social-media influencers, especially those on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, to share the experience on their own feeds with the hashtag #FanzofFlavor.

The six stops will embrace one to two of the social-media influencers at each location. “We hope their interaction on site will capture the fans attention,” Todd said. “We want that content to live on past the tailgate event. We can capture that and push it out beyond that actual event.”

At each of the 2017 tailgate tour stops, Todd said notable former athletes will participate in autograph signings and photos.

The college football tailgate tour follows a summer of special campaigns aimed at the chicken-finger portability of Zaxby’s menu, Todd said.

“We made it our mission to bring fresh campaigns and promotions to our guests in the second half of 2017,” said McLeroy, Zaxby’s CEO, in a statement. “Our team at Zaxby’s is very aware that our fans drive our business and are the reason for our success.”

Zaxby’s has more than 800 locations in 17 states.

Zaxby’s Unveils New Fan-First Initiatives for 2017

With the goal of finding more opportunities to engage with fans during memorable moments in their lives, Zaxby’s is launching a strategic agenda of fan-first initiatives for the remainder of 2017. From five first-time meal deals for $5.99 paired with its new Poolside Punch and a Summer Road Trip campaign to a college football tailgate tour and the launch of the new Zaxby’s food truck, fans will have the opportunity to connect with the brand in multiple ways across its footprint.

“We made it our mission to bring fresh campaigns and promotions to our guests in the second half of 2017,” says Zach McLeroy, CEO and co-founder of Zaxby’s “Our team at Zaxby’s is very aware that our fans drive our business and are the reason for our success. Because of that, and the loyalty they continue to show, we listen to them. That’s what the rest of 2017 is about for us.”

From July 24 through Sept. 24, all Zaxby’s locations across 17 states will offer the new 5 Meals for $5.99 Each promotion. These wallet-friendly deals are comprised of Zaxby’s traditional menu favorites, including the Big Zax Snak Meal, Boneless Wings Meal, Kickin’ Chicken Sandwich Meal, Grilled Chicken Sandwich Meal and Chicken Finger Sandwich Meal. In addition, Zaxby’s is introducing its Poolside Punch, a refreshing summer beverage offered exclusively at Zaxby’s locations beginning July 31.

Also launching for the first time this summer, Zaxby’s is focusing on a time-honored travel tradition—the summer road trip. The Zaxby’s Summer Road Trip has many variations, including travel from point A to B with stops at Zaxby’s along the way, or road trips with Zaxby’s as the destination. Interestingly, the brand cannot take credit for the origin of this idea. In this case, the credit goes to its loyal following. In the past few years, specifically since the explosion of social media outlets and influence, guests have been chronicling their journeys and making Zaxby’s a key part of the trip. The brand is taking this concept a step further by featuring these road trip experiences on Zaxby’s social media channels. Some fans and influencers may be selected to receive a “Zaxby’s Road Trip Care Package,” and encouraged to document their trip using #RoadtoFlavor.

A continuation of the road trip theme, Zaxby’s will be taking its interactive college tailgate experience, “Zaxby’s Fanz of Flavor,” on the road for the second college football season in a row. Through its longstanding partnership with IMG, Zaxby’s, along with its brand-new food truck and an interactive game-day tailgate experience led by Atlanta agency My Friend’s Nephew, will be hosting large-scale tailgates in six college towns for six rivalry matchups.

“Zaxby’s Fanz of Flavor” tailgate tour stops include:

Sept. 16—Miami at FSU

Sept. 30—Clemson at Virginia Tech

Oct. 21—Oklahoma State at Texas

Nov. 4—LSU at Alabama

Nov. 18—LSU at Tennessee

Nov. 25—Clemson at South Carolina

“Hopefully all these new campaigns will get fans excited, but we do have one more surprise,” says McLeroy. “We are also bringing back an old favorite to our menu for the fourth quarter, and will be announcing those details in the coming months.”

Zaxby’s currently operates in 17 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia.

Zaxby’s, which started in a college town, is going back to its roots as the title sponsor for superstar Brad Paisley’s upcoming tour. The “Country Nation College Tour presented by Zaxby’s” will hit the road just as college football season kicks off.

“Music and sports are passions of so many people- Zaxby’s included- and we couldn’t think of a better way to unite the two this fall,” said Zaxby’s CEO and co-founder Zach McLeroy, who views this sponsorship as the perfect opportunity to give back to fans of the Brand.

The free concert series will begin at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia on Sept. 6. The University of Texas, Baylor University and the University of Arkansas are also scheduled, with additional dates and venues to be announced in the coming weeks.

Zaxby’s sponsorship of Paisley’s tour is just another way of connecting with fans of the Brand through sports.

“We’re amping it up this football and basketball season by partnering with 30 Division 1 colleges throughout our footprint,” said McLeroy. “We’re excited to play a role in something that means so much to so many.”

Paisley’s newest single “Country Nation” from his album, Moonshine in the Trunk, will ship to country radio August 31st with an official airplay impact date of Sept. 14, according to IMG, a division of WME|IMG, which represents Paisley and brokered the college tour deal.

Zaxby's Licensee to Deliver Commencement Address at Purdue
Aug 5, 2015

http://www.purdue.edu/newsroom/releases/2015/Q3/alumnus,-entrepreneur-to-keynote-purdue-summer-commencement.html

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Shawn Taylor, a Purdue alumnus, president and operating partner of Zaxby's Houston LLC, and a limited partner in the Houston Astros Major League Baseball team, will keynote the university's summer commencement on Aug. 8.

About 1,290 students are eligible for degrees, with 260 undergraduates, 415 graduate students and one student from the professional programs, set to participate in the 9:30 a.m. commencement ceremony in Elliott Hall of Music.

Taylor was raised in the projects on the south side of Chicago by a single mother of four. The Dr. Cornell A. Bell Business Opportunity Program recruited him to Purdue in 1978. BOP laid the foundation for his success as a student, which led him to earning a bachelor's degree, with distinction, in accounting from Purdue in 1982. He quickly ascended in the business world. He began his professional career at Arthur Andersen in Dallas, the world's largest accounting firm, where he led in the recruitment and retention of minority employees at a rate never achieved by any other office in the firm.

In 1994, he founded Family EATs Limited Partnership (FELP), through which he owned and operated 33 Taco Bell restaurants in the Houston area. FELP became the largest African-American-owned Taco Bell franchise in the company's history, with more than 500 employees and nearly $30 million in sales. He also held several leadership positions within the Taco Bell system and served on its Franchise Management Advisory Council.

In 2007, Taylor sold FELP and spent the next six years working through various nonprofit organizations to give back to students from communities similar to the one in which he grew up.

He became a limited partner in the Astros baseball organization in 2011 and today serves on the Astros Foundation board of directors. In 2013, he became a franchisee for Zaxby's in Houston and recently signed a development agreement to build 35 new restaurants.

"I am honored to be invited back to Purdue, my alma mater, and to be able to talk to these graduates about what education did for me," Taylor said. "I always enjoy speaking to students about maximizing their opportunities regardless of their surroundings."

Taylor earned the Krannert School of Management's Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2012. He is a member of the school's Dean's Advisory Council. The married father of two serves on numerous nonprofit boards, including the Houston KIPP Academy. He is president of the Houston Community College Foundation and is on the finance committee of the Hermann Healthcare system.

The student responder for the ceremony will be Lindsey B. Payne of Lafayette, Indiana, who is earning a doctoral degree in ecological sciences and engineering.

The ceremony will be aired live on Comcast Channel 5 and Boiler TV Channel 26.4. It also will be shown live via webcast at http://www.kaltura.com/tiny/j3yhx and will be available to viewers on desktop and mobile devices.

Commencement videos will be available for $30 per DVD. Order forms can be obtained at the Loeb Playhouse box office, online at http://www.purdue.edu/commencement/documents/DVD_Form.pdf or by calling 765-494-3933. Forms may be submitted both before and after the ceremony within two weeks of the event.
