Zaxby's Ranks Most Craveable Fast Casual Restaurant for the Second Consecutive Year
Feb 24, 2014

http://www.qsrmagazine.com/news/zaxbys-ranks-most-craveable-fast-casual

For a second consecutive year, Zaxby’s has ranked as America’s “Most Craveable Fast Casual” by Technomic, a market research firm specializing in the restaurant industry. The 2014 Consumer’s Choice Awards for Chain Restaurants are based on responses to Technomic’s Consumer Brand Metrics Program that tracks the performance of 120 restaurants nationally.

“We are continuously looking for new experiences and flavors to provide our guests, but it’s also exciting for us to know that some of our very first menu items are still fan favorites to this day,” says Zach McLeroy, CEO and cofounder of Zaxby’s. “We’re delighted to know our guests have ranked us most craveable for a second year, and will endlessly strive to provide them with exceptional flavors they can’t get anywhere else.”

The Technomic survey asks consumers to rate restaurants on more than 60 attributes, categorizing every aspect of a guest’s experience, from satisfaction to loyalty, into five “Pillars of Excellence.” The 2014 rankings are based on consumer responses from the fourth quarter of 2012 through the third quarter of 2013. Based on those responses, Zaxby’s guests attribute its craveability to its signature chicken and variety of dipping sauces, including its popular Zax Sauce.

Zaxby’s most popular items are its hand-breaded Chicken Fingerz and Traditional or Boneless Wings, smothered in a choice of nine sauces with names like Wimpy, Tongue Torch, Nuclear, and Insane. Zaxby’s menu also offers innovative Zappetizers, prepared-at-order Zalads, and recently introduced a new line of milkshakes including the popular Birthday Cake and Banana Pudding Milkshakes and the new Chocolate Cookie Milkshake.

Zaxby’s currently operates more than 600 locations in 15 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.

Zaxby's Hits 600-Unit Milestone
Feb 24, 2014

http://www.fastcasual.com/article/228327/Zaxby-s-hits-600-unit-milestone

Zaxby's Franchising LLC has opened its 600th location, located in Washington, N.C., about 20 miles east of Greenville, N.C.

According to a news release, the 600th location is owned and operated by licensees Ryan, Randy and Beverly Tittle, who have four other Zaxby's franchised locations. This is the fifth in the Greenville-Washington, N.C., DMA.

"Opening the 600th Zaxby's location is a milestone we're very proud of," said Zach McLeroy, CEO. "Throughout the years, it has become evident that our growth and success has relied heavily on the ability to partner with extraordinary licensees, who without, Zaxby's would not be the brand it is today."

Zaxby's continues to focus on expansion, eyeing markets such as Oklahoma, Utah, Louisiana, Texas and Indiana.

Cultivating Craveability: Consumer Assessments of the Most Craveable Restaurant Chains
Jul 11, 2013
Any foodservice item may satisfy hunger, but when a consumer has a craving, only certain foods or beverages will suffice. Cravings vary from person to person, shift with the seasons and can change by the day and the occasion, but some items, such as those with sweet or salty flavor profiles, fried foods, burgers, pizza and chocolate, are particularly craveable. Cravings also typically arise on impulse, with some urgency, triggering a desire to satiate the craving immediately or in the near future. As a result, cravings play a major role in foodservice purchases. Four out of five consumers (83%) say that cravings are the main reason they purchase food away from home at least once a month, according to Technomic’s recent Menu Positioning & Occasion

Driver Consumer Trend Report.
Because craveability is a key purchase driver, Technomic’s Consumer Brand Metrics (CBM) program tracks the performance of 115 national restaurant chains on the attribute Craveable items I can only get at this restaurant. The program also measures the importance of unique, craveable items across fast-food, fastcasual, midscale and casual-dining segments. This paper uses this data to delve more deeply into craveability, examining the importance of craveable items for foodservice user groups and the role of craveability in
driving visit satisfaction and loyalty. It also offers a snapshot of the chains that consumers say most excel at offering craveable items. The findings outlined in this paper reinforce the importance of menuing items that consumers don’t just want to eat, but absolutely can’t live without...

...Zaxby’s outpaces its fast-casual competitors on craveability; 60.1% of Zaxby’s visitors say that this chain offers very good craveable items that they can only get at this concept. While it is not surprising that consumers most crave chicken dishes at this chicken chain, Zaxby’s guests also commonly crave its wide variety of signature sauces, calling out specific blends such as the Zax Sauce, Tongue Torch Sauce and Buffalo Sauce. Nearly three-fifths of consumers also praise the craveable items at Chipotle Mexican Grill (56.2%) and Firehouse Subs (55.9%). We can see that burritos and burrito bowls customized to guests’ preferences drive Chipotle’s high ratings, while specific signature subs, such as the Hook and Ladder, New York Steamer and Beef and Cheddar Brisket, keep Firehouse Subs patrons coming back for more.

QSR Magazine's Best Franchise Deals Honors Twelve Top Brands

Fourth-Annual Report Singles Out 12 Brands as Delivering the Best Bang for the Buck to Franchisees

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., July 1, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Firehouse Subs, Papa John's, and Zaxby's are among the 12 quick-service and fast-casual brands named Best Franchise Deals by QSR magazine in the publication's fourth-annual report.

The Best Franchise Deals report analyzes brands' franchisor support, average unit volume, sales-to-investment ratios, and market niches, among other things, to determine which investments give franchisees the most bang for their buck.

"Even though the economy still isn't back to pre-recession levels, franchisors are optimistic enough to start growing again," says Sam Oches, editor of QSR. "At the same time, more people are ready to invest in a business, whether for the first time or as an addition to an existing portfolio. We hope that our Best Franchise Deals can give them some direction toward which brands to consider."

This year's Best Franchise Deals was divided into three groups based on brand size: the Hungry Upstarts, the Rising Stars, and The Powerbrokers. The Hungry Upstarts, or emerging brands preparing for national growth, includes Tin Drum AsiaCafé, Fresh to Order, BurgerFi, and Taquerias Arandas; the Rising Stars, or established brands ready for the next growth step, includes Menchie's Frozen Yogurt, Barberitos, Freddy's Frozen Custard, and Penn Station East Coast Subs; and the Powerbrokers, or brands with national name recognition, includes Firehouse Subs, Papa John's, Zaxby's, and Jersey Mike's Subs.

"When you look at the sales potential, start-up costs, and franchisor support from these 12 brands, there's no doubt any of them would make a wonderful addition to a franchise portfolio," Oches says.

This year, QSR also established a Best Franchise Deals Hall of Fame, into which it ushered four brands that have already appeared on the list at least twice: Subway, Popeyes, Bojangles', and Saladworks.

"It became clear to us that these brands were worthy of the Best Franchise Deals list year after year, and as a way to shine a light on new brands while also honoring true deals, we established the Hall of Fame," Oches says.

Zaxby’s, a Georgia-based restaurant chain that features a fare of fried chicken foods, plans to open 18 Utah locations in the next five years under the management of a Nevada-based group.

Zaxby’s, which has more than 575 restaurants in 13 mostly southern states, is expanding its brand westward.

It will do so in Utah in partnership with MJM 5G, which says it has operated 30 Five Guys Burgers and Fries franchises in California and Nevada under co-founders Mike Cummings and brothers Jeff and Ryan Howes.

The majority of Zaxby’s restaurants will be in the Salt Lake Valley.

"It’s a good fit for us," Zach McLeroy, CEO and co-founder of Zaxby’s, said in a statement. "MJM 5G has great franchise experience and people, and Utah is a wide-open market for fast-casual dining concepts.

"The regional economy is good. We’re expanding westward, and solidifying our brand foundation market by market as we go."

Zaxby’s offers prepared-at-order chicken fingers, traditional or boneless wings, sandwiches and salads, along with sauces ranging from Wimpy and Tongue Torch to Nuclear and Insane.

Zaxby's headed west with 18-unit deal
Jul 2, 2013

http://www.fastcasual.com/article/215487/Zaxby-s-headed-west-with-18-unit-deal

June 28, 2013

Zaxby's Franchising Inc. has reached a multi-unit franchising agreement with MJM 5G LLC, a multiconcept owner/operator restaurant group, which will give the group exclusive rights for the state of Utah. Under the terms of the agreement, MJM 5G will open 18 Zaxby's restaurants in the next five years, with the first two locations slated to open in 2013. The deal is a major milestone for Zaxby's, the Athens, Ga.-based brand, as it continues its strategic westward expansion across the U.S., becoming a national brand, said Zach McLeroy, CEO and co-founder of Zaxby's.

In signing the licensing agreement with Zaxby's, MJM 5G cofounders Mike Cummings and brothers Jeff and Ryan Howes will bring the franchise to full capacity in Utah. The majority of the restaurants will be located in the Salt Lake Valley and Greater Salt Lake City area, which has 85 percent of the state's population.

"It's a good fit for us — MJM 5G has great franchise experience and people, and Utah is a wide-open market for fast casual dining concepts," McLeroy said. "The regional economy is good, but there's not a lot of competition in the chicken segment and we'll capitalize on that. We're expanding westward, and solidifying our brand foundation market by market as we go, so a multi-unit licensing agreement that covers the entire state will give us strategic efficiencies in marketing and awareness as our new partners build out the operating area."

The MJM 5G partners have built and operated 30 Five Guys Burgers and Fries franchises and have more than 50 years of restaurant, finance and business development experience among them. Cummings brings restaurant business management and operational experience, while the Howes brothers have finance and real-estate development backgrounds.

"Zaxby's has a cult following in the South, and we believe it'll be successful nationwide as well," said Ryan Howes. "We did a lot of research — and we ate a lot of chicken before we selected Zaxby's. The high brand standards and the focus on customers were critical."

Rapidly expanding franchise concept seeks licensees for “indescribably good” franchise opportunity.

June 13, 2013 // Franchising.com // ATLANTA, Ga. – Zaxby’s Franchising, Inc. announced today that it has launched a new franchising website at ZaxbysFranchising.com. The launch of the new ZaxbysFranchising.com was prompted by an increased demand for franchise information and coincides with an intensified focus on expansion outside of the brand’s current primary footprint in the Southeast.

How Zaxby's plans on becoming a 'household name'
May 15, 2013

May 14, 2013

April 8, 2013 - Cherryh Butler - FastCasual.com

http://www.fastcasual.com/article/211001/How-Zaxby-s-plans-on-becoming-a-household-name

Although Atlanta-based Zaxby's is widely known in the Southeast part of the country, few consumers west of the Mississippi are familiar with the chicken brand. That's where Amy Pritchett comes in; the senior director heads up the franchise development division at Zaxby's, and the brand is ready to spread its chicken wings nationwide.

Zaxby's, which launched a new franchisee website last week to introduce possible franchisees to the brand, is actively pushing the concept West, targeting specific markets in multiple states, including Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

"We are a solid regional brand," Pritchett said, "and last year we were faced with the fact that we don't really have anywhere else to go here. It's time to be more intentional with our franchising opportunities outside the area and introduce our products to audiences who haven't had the chance to try our food."

Creating brand awareness

Opening franchises on its home turf for the past 25 years hasn't been difficult, Pritchett said, because consumers were already familiar with the food. "Now, we are having to introduce the brand from scratch; we don't have the legacy of our product in these new markets," she said. To combat that issue, Zaxby's has launched a reallocation program for all locations opening west of the Mississippi. The brand will invest 2 percent of the royalties it earns from each franchisee into marketing that unit. In Texas, for example, a lot of those funds have gone toward television advertising. "We've been able to get some good cable time, and it's key to be able to present our food," Pritchett said. "It's a beautiful product, so that's doing a lot for us on television."

Competition: What competition?

Although Pritchett realizes there is a challenge in creating brand awareness, she's confident getting consumers to take notice one time will turn them into fans.

"Not to sound smug, but there's really no competition," she said. "There's really no product that's just like us — there's just nothing out there like us. When you want Zaxby's nothing else will do."

The company's research shows that it stacks up against all the other chicken chains, including Chick-fil-A, which is also based in Atlanta.

"We're spicier, zestier, and you may be in the mood for a fried chicken product, but they're just so different in my mind," she said. "We do very well side by side."

Courting the "right" franchisee

The Zaxby's franchisee can't be summed up in a few character traits, said Pritchett, who said the company once hired a firm to develop the perfect franchisee profile. It didn't work.

"Of course, we have a financial requirement, but after that it's more of a soft thing," she said. " 'Do you fit? Do you believe in our brand?' We have people from all walks of life from truck drivers to attorneys to CPAs; all different educational levels but the same core values."

Each franchisee goes through, what Pritchett describes as a date.

"We don't call it an interview. We are courting each other. We want to know who you are to see if we should continue with this relationship because it's going to be a 20-year relationship," she said.

Zaxby's, which opened 30 units in 2012, is projecting another 36 by the end of this year with a goal of hitting another 150 in the next two years. Its long-term goal is to be nationwide, which Pritchett and CEO Zach McLeroy are confident about as long as the brand sticks with two important business operations: The high quality of the food and a commitment to its culture.

"It's a brand you want to be affiliated with because it's about people," Pritchett said. "We really are a family — from the people in our office to our licensee community. We know each other by first name."

That value of putting people first has contributed to the brand's success, McLeroy said.

"Zaxby's is not here to just serve food; we're here to serve the community as well. We're about more than just about selling chicken and making money," he said. "It's a brand with a heart; it's brand with a soul, it's a brand that has passion and compassion. It's just who we are."

Link to recorded interview:

We are meeting with Zach W. McLeroy, President and C.E.O., Zaxby’s Franchising, Inc. and we are going to talk to Zach about the Zaxby’s franchise and how the chain is flourishing and poised to grow from a regional brand into a household name.

Zach McLeroy is not only the President and C.E.O. Zaxby’s Franchising, Inc., he is also a co-founder of the Zaxby’s concept.  Zach started Zaxby’s (then called “Zax”) in 1990, when he put his burgeoning music career on hold, selling his beloved drum set to open the first store.  It was in that first Zax location that he perfected the recipes that remain the core items of the Zaxby’s menu today, including the formulation of the original selection of Zaxby’s sauces.

Now, more than 20 years and 570 locations later, the chain is flourishing and poised to grow from a regional brand into a household name.  Zach remains active in the day to day operations of Zaxby’s Franchising, overseeing and directing brand development strategies and setting the vision for its continued growth.  He’s a Zaxby’s licensee himself, holding an ownership in over 95 Zaxby’s franchise locations.

New Restaurant to Provide Residents Prepared-at-Order Chicken
in a Casual Dining Atmosphere

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (March 8, 2013) — Wayne and Michael Martin will open the doors to Georgetown’s first Zaxby’s restaurant this Monday. The new restaurant is located at 1133 Lexington Road, across from Georgetown Community Hospital. A Southeast favorite for chicken fingers and wings, Zaxby’s will operate from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

“We’ve always wanted to bring a Zaxby’s to Georgetown,” said Michael Martin, who, with his Uncle, currently owns the three Lexington, Ky., locations. Zaxby’s has built its reputation and loyal following by providing excellent service and great-tasting food, and we plan to carry on that tradition with this new, convenient location.”

The new 3,200-square-foot location will seat 70 in Zaxby’s unique design — an open ceiling, modernized tables and booths, all complemented by an eclectic mix of photography. Zaxby’s also offers drive-thru services to meet the needs of customers on the go.

Michael Martin believes the restaurant — from the atmosphere to the service — will exceed community expectations. “We’ve assembled a great group of team members who will deliver on the Zaxby’s mission to ‘consistently create encore experiences that enrich lives one person at a time,’” said Martin.

The new location will be the first for Scott County, and the 20th for the Bluegrass State.

Zaxby’s currently operates more than 565 locations in 13 states — Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

An alternative to fast food, Zaxby’s offers prepared-at-order chicken fingers, wings, sandwiches and salads. Zaxby’s most popular items are its hand-breaded Chicken Fingerz and Traditional or Boneless Wings, smothered in a choice of nine sauces with names like Wimpy, Tongue Torch, Nuclear and Insane.

The menu also offers innovative Zappetizers like Tater Chips, Spicy Fried Mushrooms and Fried White Cheddar Bites, as well as a variety of Party Platterz perfect for any family gathering or special occasion.

Zaxby’s also offers three salads, or Zalads: The House, The Blue and The Caesar. All of Zaxby’s Zalads offer more chicken, unique ingredients, such as French-fried onions, fresh veggies and juicy tomatoes, and are larger than most salads offered elsewhere. Each is prepared with chicken, three kinds of lettuce and a variety of toppings. Zalads are assembled at the time the order is placed, versus being pre-made and stored in a cooler.

Additionally, Zaxby’s offers Milkshakes at participating locations, which come in chocolate, strawberry and vanilla flavors. They are rich and creamy, hand-blended, and are topped with whipped cream.
